1. Two Ways to Apply: From Home or Within Spain

Unlike many Schengen states that strictly require consular applications from your home country, Spain offers two distinct application pathways:

• Consular Route: Apply at the Spanish Consular Office or BLS Spain Centre in your home country 2 to 3 months before your course start date. You will receive a 90-day National D-type visa to enter Spain.
• In-Country Route (Application from within Spain): If you enter Spain legally as a tourist (either on a Schengen 90-day visa or visa-free passport), you can apply directly for an Autorización de Estancia por Estudios at the local Oficina de Extranjería or via the online Mercurio portal, provided you have at least 30 calendar days of legal stay remaining.

Under Spanish immigration law, financial sufficiency is pegged to the IPREM (Indicador Público de Renta de Efectos Múltiples):

3. Private Health Insurance: The 'Sin Copago' Requirement
