The Genuine Student (GS) Requirement

The Department of Home Affairs evaluates all international applicants under the Genuine Student (GS) framework. Instead of a generic statement of intent, applicants must address targeted questions assessing:

• Current personal, economic, and family circumstances in the home country.
• Specific reasons for selecting the chosen provider and academic program.
• Realistic employment prospects and expected return on investment in the home country post-graduation.

Financial Proof & Cost of Living Threshold

Applicants must show evidence of funds to cover travel, 12 months of tuition fees, and living costs of at least AUD 29,710 for the primary student, plus AUD 10,394 for an accompanying spouse and AUD 4,449 per child.

Work Entitlements During Study

Subclass 500 visa holders are legally permitted to work up to 48 hours per fortnight while their university course is in session, and unlimited hours during recognized university vacation periods. Minimum award wage protections under the Fair Work Ombudsman strictly apply to all international student employees.
